Hon. Mark Bennett
Mark Bennett was appointed U.S. Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court, Southern District of Iowa, on December 2, 1991. Judge Bennett has jurisdiction over federal civil and criminal matters in three broad categories of proceedings: (1) pretrial matters in civil and criminal cases; (2) the trial of criminal misdemeanor and petty offenses; and (3) jury and non-jury trials of civil cases where the parties consent. Prior to his appointment as a U.S. Magistrate Judge, Mark W. Bennett was a partner in the Des Moines law firm of Babich, Bennett & Nickerson. He specialized in federal civil litigation with a major emphasis on the prosecution and defense of employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, constitutional and civil rights litigation. This litigation experience spanned numerous federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the United States. Judge Bennett continues to teach as an adjunct professor at the Drake University Law School and has taught as a lecturer in law at the University of Iowa College of Law. He is frequently invited to speak at seminars on a variety of topics related to civil rights, constitutional and employment discrimination litigation, including presentations before federal and state court judges' associations. Prior to his appointment to the federal bench, Judge Bennett was involved in wide-ranging professional organizations, committee work and community service. This included serving as the Chair of the Civil Justice Reform Act of 1990 Advisory Group - United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, the Board of Governors of the Association of Trial Lawyers of Iowa, as a Fellow in the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, and as a Master of the Bench, Blackstone Inn of Court. On a lighter note, Judge Bennett enjoys gourmet cooking, making brass mobiles, and gardening.

Hon. Cheryl B. Carey
Judge Cheryl Carey is a graduate of Seattle University School of Law. After graduation she served as a King County Deputy Prosecutor and later as an Assistant Attorney General. In the Attorney General's Office she led the Civil Rights Section of the Corrections Division and supervised the Seattle Labor and Employment Law Section of the Labor and Employment Law Division. While in that Division, Judge Carey was instrumental in creating the WSBA Labor and Employment Law Section. Judge Carey was elected to the King County Superior Court in 2000. She has been a member of the Court's Executive Committee and Family Law Committee, and for many years she chaired the Personnel Committee. She has served in the Court's Criminal, Civil and Unified Family Court Departments and is currently Chief Criminal Judge. Judge Carey considers public service to be an honor.
